IN THE MOMENT

June 21st, 2020

by Celeste Ortiz

2020 has been a strange year for my photography. It started off with me not having 35mm film to work with, and then when I finally got it and could take all the pictures I wanted, the pandemic broke out and I was unable to develop the film since the lab was on lockdown. So, for the past weeks I have been giving instant film a try. I have shot on this medium before, but you need more than a couple of shots here and there to figure out how it works best for you. I like the rawness of this kind of film: You press the button and that's it. You get the image and you like it or you don't, and then there's not much you can do about it. It feels like a good way to catch a moment, different from when I shoot on 35mm and see the result some time later through nostalgic eyes.

Apart from the medium I use, my work (and my life in general) hasn't changed much with the pandemic. I always shoot at home and use myself as a model. I love being home and being alone. My quarantine began with me sharing a home with my mother and sister and it felt so crowded. Even if I'm just going to shoot in my room, I like to have the house just for myself. A thing I like about these images is how they turned out so warm and yellowish. It's autumn here in Chile so that seems very appropriate.
