Here are 16 songs about connecting with people across space and time, finding unity in loneliness, or just telling the listener that it’s gonna be OK. I made this playlist early on in quarantine, and already it feels like a time capsule. Thousands of people all over the world have since gathered in response to the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and too many more Black lives at the hands of white supremacy. I feel grief and rage, and sometimes pessimism. But being one among thousands is a powerful antidote to hopelessness. I initially made this playlist to feel less alone. Listening to these songs now, my mind drifts to pictures of despair, joy, and collective liberation.
